Substance Use Disorders

Benzodiazepine use disorder can be tapered safely.

Benzodiazepines like Xanax, Klonopin, Ativan and Valium can create dependence even when taken as prescribed. Stopping safely takes medical guidance — and we’re here to provide it.

Benzodiazepine Use Disorder
Understanding it

What is Benzodiazepine Use Disorder?

Benzodiazepine use disorder involves a problematic pattern of use or dependence on sedative medications prescribed for anxiety, panic or sleep. Because the body adapts to these drugs, physical dependence can develop even with appropriate use — and withdrawal can be serious.

Wave offers physician-supervised tapering and treatment of the underlying anxiety or insomnia that often drives benzodiazepine use, so you’re not left without support.

Signs & symptoms

Signs of benzodiazepine use disorder can include:

Emotional / Cognitive

  • Anxiety or panic when a dose is late
  • Feeling unable to cope without the medication
  • Difficulty concentrating or memory lapses

Behavioral

  • Needing higher doses over time
  • Running out early or seeking extra prescriptions
  • Using for effects beyond the original purpose

Physical

  • Rebound anxiety or insomnia between doses
  • Withdrawal — tremor, sweating, agitation
  • Dizziness or unsteadiness

In crisis? Never stop benzodiazepines abruptly. Sudden withdrawal can cause seizures and other dangerous symptoms — a medically supervised taper is the safe way, and we can guide it.

The evaluation

How it’s diagnosed at Wave

We review your full medication history, the reason benzodiazepines were started, and any underlying anxiety, panic or sleep disorder. This shapes a taper that comes down gradually while treating the root cause.

Because abrupt cessation is risky, diagnosis always includes assessing how to reduce safely and what support you’ll need along the way.

Common questions

Benzodiazepine Use Disorder FAQ

Why can’t I just stop benzodiazepines on my own?

Stopping benzodiazepines suddenly can lead to significant withdrawal symptoms, including severe anxiety, insomnia, agitation, and in some cases seizures.

For this reason, discontinuation should always be done through a gradual, medically supervised taper to ensure safety and minimize withdrawal effects.

Will my anxiety or insomnia come back when I stop?

Many patients are concerned about symptom recurrence during tapering. We address this by treating the underlying condition—such as anxiety or insomnia—concurrently during the taper.

This may include non-addictive medications, psychotherapy, and in some cases interventional treatments such as TMS, depending on clinical indication. The goal is to support symptom stability throughout the process.

How long does benzodiazepine tapering take?

The duration of tapering varies widely based on dosage, duration of use, and individual response.

Tapers are highly individualized and adjusted over time to prioritize safety, comfort, and stability rather than following a fixed timeline.

What symptoms can occur during benzodiazepine withdrawal?

Withdrawal symptoms may include:

  • Increased anxiety or restlessness
  • Insomnia
  • Irritability
  • Physical symptoms such as tremor or muscle tension
  • Difficulty concentrating

A gradual taper significantly reduces the severity of these symptoms.

Is benzodiazepine tapering dangerous?

When done abruptly, benzodiazepine discontinuation can be medically dangerous. However, when managed through a structured and gradual taper under clinical supervision, it is significantly safer and more tolerable.

Will I be given another medication to replace benzodiazepines?

Not necessarily. The goal is not simply to substitute one medication for another, but to stabilize symptoms using the safest and most appropriate long-term strategy.

Depending on your situation, this may include non-addictive medications, therapy, sleep interventions, or other evidence-based psychiatric treatments.

How do I know if I need a supervised taper?

You may benefit from a supervised taper if:

  • you have been taking benzodiazepines regularly or long-term
  • you experience difficulty reducing your dose
  • you rely on them for sleep or anxiety management
  • you have concerns about dependence or side effects

A comprehensive evaluation helps determine the safest approach.

Can I function normally while tapering?

Many patients continue working, caring for family, and maintaining daily responsibilities during a taper.

The pace of tapering is adjusted to minimize disruption and support functional stability throughout the process.
